How to Shop Sustainable Baby Gifts

Did you know it’s National Recycle Week? It’s the one week of the year where retailers, brands, governments and the media come together to achieve one goal: to encourage the public into recycling correctly and more often. It helps to create the opportunity for everyone to implement positive changes that will help protect our environment. We see the words sustainable, organic and eco-friendly on our screens all the time, but it’s difficult to know how to change up our shopping habits to fit into these categories. To give you a little helping hand, we’ve come up with some tips and ideas on how to shop sustainable baby gifts, without having to compromise on quality or design.

Shopping Sustainable Baby Gifts and Clothes

1 – Take care of toys and clothes

Increasing the longevity of children’s clothes and toys is a lot easier than you may think. The more you wash, the faster they may fade, stretch or even shrink, so you should only wash when you have to. Also adding extra detergent can do more harm than good, so less is definitely more.

2 – Buy less and buy high quality

Children’s clothes and toys will inevitably go through the wars, so you should always look for high quality, durable items that will last. It sounds odd, but clothes that need less washing, drying and ironing last longer! Another bonus – less chores to do!

3 – Hand down and donate

Kids will also grow out of clothes and toys quickly, so handing down to others or donating to charity is the next thing to do. Never throw in the bin unless ruined or unwearable.

Keel Toys – Keeleco Personalised Baby Gifts

Keel Toys are one of the largest designer, importer and exporters of soft toys in the UK. Established in 1947, Keel Toys is a third generation, family run business; under the directorship of brothers, Richard, David, John and James Keel. They continually strive to maintain this impressive position, developing relationships with their customers built on trust, excellence, quality of service and innovative design from their in-house team.

We are delighted to have the very popular Sherwood bear and the 100% recycled Keeleco ‘eco friendly’ bear in our That’s mine range of teddy bears. And of course, this means all bears are personalised with our exclusive That’s mine embroidered jumpers.

Keeleco – The Eco Teddies

Keeleco is the 100% recycled range from Keel Toys. Did you know these eco-friendly toys are manufactured and stuffed with 100% recycled polyester from plastic waste? Weighted with recycled glass beads; perfectly designed for hugging by a loving new friend.

WHAT MAKES THE PROCESS ECO-FRIENDLY?

Single use plastics are a big no no, so to reduce the amount, Keeleco obtains bottles and other plastic waste and magically turns it into these cuddly soft toys. How is this done, you ask? Well, firstly they use recycled polyester; obtained by first collecting plastic waste and cleaning it. Clean bottles are then shredded, and crushed and this forms pellets. The pellets are melted to create yarn, and the yarn is spun to create thread. Then, the thread is woven to create the base fabric. Therefore, giving plastic bottles a second life! Also, this process uses 59% less energy than creating virgin polyester.

Shop Loved-Before Teddies

If you were looking for a 100% sustainable way to buy a new teddy, then Loved Before is the perfect solution. Loved Before rehomes donated toys and teddies, with sustainability playing a huge part in their overall brand mission. The pre-loved teddies arrive at their headquarters, have a clean and refresh and then get added to the store to start their new adventure! Saving the world, one teddy at a time!

How you can help others

The Teddy Trust is an incredible organisation that collects teddy bears from children around the UK and sends them to children who are suffering the traumas of war, starvation or abuse. They work with Aid agencies and other charities who ensure that the teddy bears reach the children. They then give feedback about the ‘profound and enduring effect’ this gift has on the children. It’s a great way to give your teddy bears a new home, and give a child in need a friend to talk to and cuddle in the darkest moments.
